Love Science and Art?
So do I and my adult life is dedicated to embracing them both as they are my co-equal passions and feed one another, inspiring this brain of mine to explore the dynamic intricacies the world has to offer.
How Did I Get Here?
That's a great question. I'll skip the origin story of slavery, emancipation, and the struggle for equality and begin with supportive family and friends who saw me through undergraduate at the University of Cincinnati, graduate school at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, and getting my DVM from the University of Melbourne (click here for full details). The next logical question is how I made the leap from a scientific educational background to writing musicals? While studying to get my vet degree there was a resurgence of my long suppressed but never dormant passion for writing. It became my way to cope with stress and anxiety that are as much a part of that degree as my student loans. So I studied and I wrote. I graduated and I wrote more. I moved to NYC to work with a fantastic composer named Richard Philbin and we wrote and I practiced vet medicine. Then I moved back to Ohio (I needed space for a bigger garden); so now I work and I write and my brain feels satisfied (until I have writer's block or I go home with poop in my pocket - occupational hazards).
